Within my scope of practice I am licensed to prescribe all psychotropic medications for psychiatric disorders including controlled substances. This includes anti-depressants, anti-anxiety, anti-psychotics, mood stabilizers, ADD/ADHD medications - including stimulant medications, dementia medications, addiction medications such as Chantix for smoking or Antabuse and Naltrexone for alcohol use (as three examples).
I am also knowledgeable about the use of complementary and nutritional therapies to either enhance a medication effect or as an adjunct to a medication regime. In some cases, certain conditions can be managed alone with Complementary and/or Nutritional therapies alone. I do not recommend or make any suggestions to my patients about any medications or therapies without a solid foundation of empirical evidence that has been well researched and published in well-respected medical publications and journals.
I am licensed to prescribe psychiatric medications to any resident of CA, AZ, WA, IA, and FL. However, Please note that I do not prescribe benzodiazepines (Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin, Valium, Ambien, Lunesta, etc.) EXCEPT for very brief periods of time and under certain circumstances, or opiate type medications. I currently hold an active DEA # for Schedule II-V medications in the State of Iowa and Florida.
Lastly, I am able to offer to my patients a means of genetic testing that is often covered by their insurance company or for a nominal fee. This specific type of testing will identify for the patient which medication/medications would be most effective for that patient based on his/her unique DNA. This ofen eliminates the Trial and Error approach that has previously been the basis for prescribing psychotropic medications, and now can save the patient AND the insurance companies time and money by isolating the most effective medication as well as the best dosage level for each unique individual.
